During pregnancy, mothers-to-be can experience all sorts of aches and pains .  Using yoga during pregnancy to reduce prenatal aches and pains can help mothers-to-be relax.  There are a number of yoga poses designed for women during the prenatal period.  Some of these poses are so relaxing that women use them in the postpartum period as well.

Today, we’re hearing from Melissa Drenzek, a mom of two and Healthy Moms instructor. She teaches yoga and power stroller classes.

Drenzek, who had taught yoga, left her corporate job after the birth of her older daughter four years ago. She took a power stroll class with Healthy Moms and, as she says, was recruited to become one of their instructors.

Drenzek says her yoga classes – for pregnant moms and moms with their babies – aren’t your typical yoga classes. Moms-to-be might end up talking for much of the class about maternity clothes or how their feeling. Her mommy and me yoga aren’t usually all that peaceful.

“Babies will be crying, babies will be making other noises,” she laughs. “This will not be a quiet yoga class.”

As much as the classes are about staying fit and exercising, they’re also about forming a community and friendships that often last long after the class is over, she says.

Yoga, Drenzek says, can help moms as they go through pregnancy with the aches and pains in the back and hips that many moms experience.

Some studies have shown that practicing yoga during pregnancy to reduce prenatal aches and pains can also reduce your time in labor.  It can also help with weight control, so that you can keep in shape without depriving your baby of nutrition.
